At least 570 people a day in the United States have experienced a sexual assault
Thousands of people are sexually assaulted. Every 98 seconds someone in the United States is sexually assaulted.
Sexual violence has become normalized through different violent rape scenes on hit TV shows. Famous athletes telling young girls to keep quiet.
Every day there is a new story being released about a sexual assault on campus. The doctor who was sexually abusing 100 women. These are all examples of sexual violence being normalized in today’s society.
It is surprising to find out how many people are ignoring or not educated enough on the topic of sexual violence.
These conversations NEED to start at home
There are a ton of support groups for individuals who have experienced a sexual assault. For preventing sexual violence, people need to start understanding the reality of it, and how it happens very often.
The estimated number of women who have been sexually assaulted since 1998 is 17,700,000. That is insane!
After doing some research, the percentage of perpetrators that will walk free is 99 percent. This percentage is the reason why so many women want to remain silent.
Women see other women like Dr. Christine Blasey Ford come forward about an attack, and is told either to be quiet or is told that they don’t believe them.
Some knowledge learned after doing some research, 13 percent of female rape survivors will commit suicide.
These statistics really bothered me. Most of the time the person in this situation feels as if they are alone and that no one would believe them about the attack.
No one should ever feel alone, or feel like they don’t have enough courage to come forward because you do.
If the person that you told the attack to first doesn’t believe you, or gives you an answer that does not satisfy you then keep going through individuals that will and want to listen.
Of course it is never easy to hear that someone has been sexually assaulted but believe me that person is going through a rollercoaster of emotions at the time.
After experiencing a sexual assault, many individuals need to do extra measures to help go through this sort of trauma.
This could be including court and lawyer costs if the victim decides to go through with a case against the perpetrator. The total amount of money “rape” costs victims is $127,000,000,000.
More and more people are trying to become more involved with spreading awareness and preventing sexual assaults on campus. These statistics are alarming, but necessary for people to learn.
